DIVINATRIX
Divinatrix is a stainless steel fire and water sculpture that merges elemental spectacle with spiritual resonance. Elevated six feet off the ground, its basin releases vibrant flames and thick steam through forced-air combustion, creating a dynamic interplay of fire and water. Three spires rise from this basin, shifting from intense heat and roaring flames to a calm display of mist and reflection. The sculpture holds up to 45 gallons of water, with fire effects that can reach heights of over 20 feet.
The sculpture’s form originated in sketches centered around a recurring “knuckle” shape — a jointed curve that hinted at movement and organic function. Seeking balance and symmetry, I explored the form digitally in Blender, refining its scale in relation to the human body and integrating concealed systems for fire and water. The process felt akin to sculpting in clay, my native material, allowing the piece to evolve intuitively.
Tripling the form resolved a spatial challenge and unexpectedly conjured the image of the Three Graces — archetypes of beauty, charm, and creativity. Forged from the remains of an earlier sculpture, The Harmonizer, Divinatrix embodies both sacrifice and transformation. Throughout its creation, I was deeply influenced by a circle of strong women whose presence shaped the work’s spirit, lending it both divinity and fire.
